September 2017: here is a selection of events not to be missed in the Metropolitan City of Florence, as listed on firenzeturismo.it, the area’s official tourist website

An evening of colourful paper lanterns: Festa della Rificolona, among Florence’s most famous events, is back on 7 September. The historical festival is held in the central Piazza Santissima Annunziata, much to the delight of children.

“Festa del Perdono” is another traditional celebration in September, with various events including food festivals and historical parades taking place mainly in Valdarno. Figline, Incisa and Rignano are some of the local councils celebrating this festival.

Should you like prose or poetry, Avamposti CalenzanoTeatroFestival 2017 offers a wide selection of events to choose from. Expect premieres, readings, mises en éspace, groundbreaking performances as well as works in progress. The theme of this year’s festival in Calenzano is “The stranger”.

For culture: this month brings a new major exhibition to Palazzo Strozzi. The spectacular “The Cinquecento in Florence. From Michelangelo and Pontormo to Giambologna”, will open from 21st September.

For the handicrafts: from 22nd to 24th September, Florence will host “ARTour-Il bello in piazza”, a mobile trade-show in Piazza Strozzi. The weekend, dedicated to fine craftsmanship and shopping provides those who are looking for some original gift ideas, with the opportunity to browse stalls that celebrate local arts and crafts.

September is also the month dedicated to wine. Among other events, Expo of Chianti Classico is back in Greve while Impruneta celebrates the Grape Festival with a parade of allegorical carts. Yet more fine food and wine tastings at the historical festival, Bacco Artigiano, at Villa di Poggio Reale in Rufina.
