Events in Florence and the Metropolitan area in March 2018

March is the month leading up to Easter. On the four Sundays of Lent before the Christian celebration, the Cricket Festival (Festa del Grillo) will be back at the Cascine Park in Florence.
On 1 April, Easter Sunday, the traditional ceremony of the explosion of the cart and the Flight of the Dove will take place in Piazza Duomo.
Amongst other events and historical reenactments, the Florentine New Year will be celebrated in Piazza Santissima Annunziata on 25 March. Historically, this date marked the beginning of the civil year in Florence, to coincide with the Feast of the Annunciation by the angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary.
Many exhibitions will be open to visitors this month.
From 8 March, “Women Artists and Musicians of the 16th and 17th century”, will be held at Oratorio of Santa Caterina Delle Ruote in Bagno a Ripoli. This exhibition collects artworks from the Uffizi and the Stibbert Museum in Florence. From 16 March to 22 July the exhibition “Dawn of a Nation”, at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, will showcase work by the most memorable artists of the 20th century such as Renato Guttuso, Lucio Fontana and Mario Schifano. From 18 March, Empoli will tell the history of the Great War with a commemorative exhibition organised by the Red Cross.
On 2 March music will take centre stage at Mandela Forum with the concert of Ennio Morricone. The Maestro who won two Academy Awards will be celebrating his career with the 60 Years of Music Tour”
From one Oscar winner to another, Nicola Piovani will conduct his own memorable film scores at Teatro Verdi on 20 March.
For Jazz lovers, from 1 to 4 March “Sesto Jazz Festival 2018” will be back in Sesto Fiorentino
Many food festivals held across the area will celebrate the local delicacies. Amongst others, the Marzuolo Truffle Festival will open in Certaldo from 9 March, the rice fritters’ Festival will be held on 17 and 18 March in Greve in Chianti, while on the 31 March in Figline Valdarno will be time to crack the chocolate Easter egg.
