Events in Florence and the Metropolitan area in May 2019

This is a selection of events taking place in May 2019 in Florence and the Metropolitan area. The full programme is listed on the area’s official tourist website, Firenze Turismo

The highlight of the month is Giro d’Italia running across various districts of the Metropolitan Area. Stage 2 of the prestigious cycling race will reach Fucecchio on 12 May. The following day, Vinci will see the start of Stage 3, which is dedicated to the 500th anniversary of Leonardo’s death.

Exhibitions – As part of the commemorations of the death of Leonardo Da Vinci, Museo Leonardiano will host “Leonardo da Vinci. At the origins of the genius”. Verrocchio the Master of Leonardo will be held at Palazzo Strozzi, while Palazzo Vecchio will display a selection of drawings from the artist’s famous Atlantic Codex.
Until 28 June, Palazzo Medici Riccardi will show 60 photographs documenting the friendship between the pop-rock legend, David Bowie and the Japanese master photographer Masayoshi Sukita.
Every Monday throughout 2019 young people aged between 18 and 25, who are a citizen of the European Union, will be offered free entry to the Museum of Palazzo Vecchio, Museum Novecento, Museum Stefano Bardini, Brancacci Chapel and the Salvatore Romano Foundation.

Fairs and markets – On 17, 18 and 19 May Impruneta will organize the 5th Buongiorno Ceramica, the national fair of Italian ceramics. Folklore will be the main attraction in Fuceccio on 10 May with the historical parade, and the horse race of Palio delle Contrade.

Food Festivals – Dedicated to all wine lovers, the 62nd Mostra del Chianti will be held in Monterspertoli at the end of the month, from 30 May to 2 June.
Lastly, for the sports, the 47th edition of the “100 Km of Passatore, Florence-Faenza” will be held on 26 May.
