Events in Florence and the Metropolitan Area in September 2020

This is a selection of events taking place in September 2020 in Florence and the Metropolitan area. The full programme is listed on the area’s official tourism website, Feel Florence.

The 2020 Formula One, Tuscan Grand Prix is the big highlight of the month. For the first time, the motor World Championship will take place at the Mugello race track in Scarperia, on 13 September. The month starts with a long-awaited special event as part of the fashion fair Pitti Immagine in Florence. On 2 and 3 September, Dolce&Gabbana’s show will be a tribute to Florence’s history and art, celebrating the city’s timeless elegance and the mastery of its artisan’s workshops But September is also one of the last months to enjoy the longer days and the mild weather. With this in mind, Passeggiate Fiorentine is a series of walks around Florence’s attractions: from Piazzale Michelangelo to San Niccolo’ on 5, 19 and 20 September. On 12 and 13 visitors will discover the Renaissance Palaces, the Basilica of Sant’ Agostino and the Augustinian complex while on 26 September the walk will take place at the Botanical Garden. Tickets can be booked online, visiting the website of Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze.
Exhibitions: Until 5 October, Museo Novecento will host a retrospective of Allan Kaprov, showcasing 40 of his drawings and paintings. The photographic exhibition Kurt Kobain and the Grunge Revolution will be open at Palazzo Medici Riccardi until 18 October. For the first time on display in Florence, Museo Bardini will present work by Irish artist Kevin Francis Gray. The Town Hall of Pontassieve will explore work by Ottone Rosai, the artist who marked the Florentine cultural scene in the first half of the twentieth century.
Fairs: From 17 to 20 September, Giardini Corsini in Florence will host the 26th Artigianato e Palazzo. During the 4-day event, the finest master craftsmen will interact with visitors Cinema: From 23 to 30 September, Teatro la Compagnia will organize the 18th Korea Film Festival. Arene di Marte, the outdoor cinemas of Nelson Mandela Forum in Florence, will be open until 12 September screening two films per night. The Festival Scandicci Open City will bring over 120 cultural events around districts and hills, until 27 September.
Music: Until 10 September Teatro Romano di Fiesole will host “Gli Anni Verdi”, an evening dedicated to the great Master Giuseppe Verdi. The events of Estate Fiesolana will also take place in the atmospheric backdrop of the Roman Amphitheatre. Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina will perform at Museo del Bargello for 4 evenings on 6, 7, 15 e 16 September. The 31st Florence Dance Festival will take place until 16 September showcasing the most important national and international dance companies. The fourth Fortissimo Firenze Festival will be back in Florence from 21 September to 6 October, with a series of ten concerts dedicated to Italian emerging talent. On a different note, on 5 and 6 September Visarno Arena will host the electronic music festival, Decibel Open Air. Last but not least, from 3 September to 8 October the 27th Fabbrica Europa will be back in Florence at Parco delle Cascine, Teatro Puccini, Teatro Studio di Scandicci and Teatro Cantiere Florida.
Finally, for the Sports: From 10 to 13 September Borgo San Lorenzo will host Vivi Lo Sport, a festival dedicated to sports and free-time activities. The 28th Corri la Vita, the traditional charity run in Florence, will be held On 27 September.
