Art, culture and a wide variety of outdoor activities are taking place in Florence and the Metropolitan area in August 2017. This selection of events not to be missed is listed on the city’s official tourist website: firenzeturismo.it.

The annual Feast of San Lorenzo is celebrated on 10th August. Florence marks the event with the historical parade in the city centre and a party in front of the Basilica of San Lorenzo. Special celebrations are also held in Mugello and Borgo San Lorenzo.

In the night of the shooting stars, “Calici di Stelle” offers wine tasting and local produce to those waiting to make a wish upon a falling star. This much-anticipated event takes place in several locations including Montespertoli, San Casciano and Greve in Chianti.

August sees many food festivals like Sagra del Cinghiale in Palazzuolo Sul Senio and in Marradi. While Fucecchio celebrates the steak, the food festival in Certaldo is dedicated to the local red onion, and Monterspertoli’s to pappardella.

Those spending Ferragosto in Florence will be able to enjoy some seaside fun thanks to the sand castle competition, held at Spiaggia sull’Arno in Lungarno Serristori. As an alternative on the 15th August, the Park of Pratolino is perfect for a relaxing day trip in nature on the outskirts of Florence.

Cultural events include “Oltre Le Mura”. The contemporary Chinese art exhibition is held until September at Palazzo Medici Riccardi, where the offices of the Metropolitan City of Florence are located. Italian contemporary art is also on display at Forte Belvedere, with the spectacular exhibition “Ytalia” open until October.
