Florence and metropolitan area: events in December 2021
Here is a rundown of events scheduled for December 2021 in Florence and the surrounding area
The announcements are taken from Feel Florence, the official tourism site of the Municipality of Florence and the metropolitan city area.
Despite the anti-Covid measures currently in place, in keeping with tradition, there are numerous events on offer in the area, leading up to Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
Take a walk through the centre of Florence among the Christmas lights, see the tree in Piazza del Duomo and enjoy the illuminations around the main monuments of the city, provided once again by the 2022 edition of the F-Light Festival. Visit the Christmas market in Piazza Santa Croce, host to
over fifty traditional wooden stalls, offering products from all over Europe – on until 19 December.
The exhibition “A journey through Florence as it once was – the artisans of Father Christmas” opens on 11 December at the Galleria delle Carrozze; original bicycles from the period between 1900 to 1930 will be on display, each one equipped with a little itinerant artisanal shop.
“Empoli Christmas” is home to Father Christmas’s grotto, an ice-skating rink, a fairground and little markets, through until 16 January. A varied programme of events is also on offer with “Winter lights in Calenzano”, “Christmas in Campi Bisenzio”, “Christmas in Impruneta”, “The magic of
Christmas” in Castelfiorentino and “Happy Christmas Montespertoli” whilst in Signa, events for people for all ages will take place on several days. From the Scandicci Winter programme, a variety of events including music, theatre, cinema and performances are on offer until 1 January.
On 18 December, a Christmas concert with the Orchestra of Tuscany will take place at the Teatro Garibaldi in Figline. “Natalia, the home of Father Christmas” will be open on Sundays in December in Fucecchio.
Be sure not to miss out on the age-old tradition of the nativity. In Palazzuolo sul Senio the exhibition “1000 nativities for Palazzuolo” is back and open until 6 January; in Cerreto Guidi “the road of nativities” returns, with creations made from a great variety of materials, on show
throughout the old town centre until 9 January.
We bid farewell to 2021 with a New Year’s Eve concert from Maggio Musicale, conducted by the celebrated Zubin Mehta.
Dante 700 – Several events have been planned to mark the 700th anniversary of the death of “the Supreme Poet”. Open until 29 December, the exhibition “An unexpected legacy; the fragments of the Divine Comedy in the Innocenti archives” is on display in the San Giovanni Hall of the
Institute.
Exhibitions – “Il Fiorentino. Il Gran Diamante di Toscana” open until 26 January at The Palazzo Medici Riccardi, is an exhibition dedicated to the rare and beautiful Medici diamond known as “Il Fiorentino”.
