The month starts with Labour Day. In Florence 1 May is traditionally celebrated with a stroll at Cascine in Fiera, the yearly fair organised in the biggest park of the city.

For the exhibitions: In Florence “Dawn of a Nation” will showcase work by the most memorable artists of the 20th century, such as Renato Guttuso, Lucio Fontana and Mario Schifano. The exhibition will be held at Palazzo Strozzi throughout the month. Palazzo Medici Riccardi, will celebrate 95 years of the Italian Air Force displaying historical material in the Galleria delle Carrozze.

Food and handicrafts: on 5 and 6 May, Castelfiorentino will once again host “Agricola’, the trade show dedicated to local produce, which will gather businesses from the sector in Viale Roosevelt.
From 16 May to 6 June, wine lovers will be able to head to Montespertoli where the 61st Mostra del Chianti will offer tastings, performances and local markets. On 19 and 20 May, cows, sheep, goats, donkeys and horses will take centre stage in the 29th Antica Fiera del bestiame, Valdarno’s ancient fair of cattle in Rignano sull’Arno.

From 25 to 27 May, Montelupo Fiorentino will celebrate its most ancient craft with Festa della Terracotta showcasing historical trades.
On the 26 and 27 May the Medieval Festival in Malmantile will turn the hills around Lastra a Signa into a 13th century village.

Among other festivals celebrating sports and local traditions, on 20 May Fucecchio will host Palio delle Contrade, the most popular and treasured event in the city. The day will start with the historical parade of 1200 extras in historical costumes, taking place in the morning, followed by the race of 12 horses representing the city quarters, to be held in the afternoon.
