Poggi’s Ramps reopen in Florence
Leading from Piazzale Michelangelo to Piazza Poggi, the Ramps reopen after revamp. A century on, the inauguration of the complex was marked by an event-packed party
A sunny afternoon was the perfect setting for the inauguration of the Ramps. On 1 June thousands of people attended the celebrations full of events which took place all along the Ramps, offering postcards views of the City of Florence, from Piazzale Michelangelo to Piazza Poggi, as well as from the Tower of San Niccolo’.
The Ramps were built in the second half of the 19th Century by architect Giuseppe Poggi. They wind their way across three different levels: the grottos, the great tank, and the cliffs and the little grottos, made of stone from the quarries of Monte Ripaldi.
After a century, the complex of the Ramps is finally brought back to its former beauty with the spectacular fountains and the water games, which are now fully functioning thanks to the restoration work funded by Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze with 2.5 million euros.
