Here is our selection of events taking place in September 2018 in the Metropolitan City of Florence. The full programme is listed on the area’s official tourist website firenzeturismo.it
Sports: Among the main events this month, one of the most unusual, the Volleyball Men’s World Championship, will be held at the Mandela Forum from 12 to 18 September. Florence is one of the cities chosen to host the finals in pool A.
For the exhibitions: “The Cleaner” will open at Palazzo Strozzi on 21 September. This major retrospective will look at the groundbreaking work of Marina Abramović, one of the most famous and controversial figures in contemporary art.
Folkloristic events will be the main attraction in many districts of the Metropolitan City of Florence. Festa Della Rificolona, the Paper Lantern Festival, will take place over the first two weekends in September. On 8 September Signa will host the Medieval Festival with the traditional burning of the tower. On 9 September the 38th Giostra della Stella and Palio delle Contrade will be held in Bagno a Ripoli. Local municipalities in Valdarno will celebrate The Feast of Pardon with their traditional Palio, which will take place across the four weekends in September.
On Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 the European Heritage Days will offer the opportunity to visit museums and other local cultural sites free of charge.
For the Food Festivals: From 6 to 9 September Greve in Chianti will host the 48th Expo of Chianti Classico, the showcase of wine producers. From 7 to 9 September, the 5th edition of Cookstock will take visitors on a culinary journey through the streets of Pontassieve. From 27 to 30 September, Rufina will celebrate Bacco Artigiano, with food stands, tastings, and talks with chefs and wine producers at Villa di Poggio Reale. On 30 September the 92nd Grape Festival will be back in Impruneta in Piazza Buondelmonti.
